Why the stamp was issued: To honor the creation of the Super Bowl, the biggest yearly event in football.
About the stamp design: Pictures an image of the first Super Bowl ticket. Includes the following text on the back: “The first championship game between the American Football League and the National Football League was January 15, 1967. Later dubbed the Super Bowl, the NFL’s Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs.”
First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the Brown County Exposition Center in Green Bay, across the street from Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers football team.
About the Celebrate the Century series: The USPS launched the Celebrate the Century series in 1998 to mark the end of the 20th century and herald the arrival of the 21st. The series includes 10 sheets of 15 stamps (150 in total), with each honoring important moments from a different decade (1900s, 10s, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s). At the time of completion, it was the longest and most ambitious commemorative stamp series in US history.
History the stamp represents: Since its inception over 30 years ago, the Super Bowl championship game has become a significant part of American culture. Competing in the first game were the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League.
The first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967, at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. Fans numbered 61,946, which left 30,000 or so seats empty. The most expensive tickets were $12. Each member of the winning team was awarded a $15,000 bonus. Those on the defeated team each received $7,500.
The Kansas City Chiefs were two-touchdown underdogs to coach Vince Lombardi’s powerhouse Green Bay team. But the Chiefs didn’t give up the game easily. Led by quarterback Lenny Dawson, the Chiefs were down just 14-10 going into the second half.
In the second half, Kansas City forced Green Bay quarterback Bart Starr to throw his first interception in 173 throws. But the Pakcers dominated the rest of the game. Starr led a 56-yard drive in the third quarter and an 80yard drive in the fourth quarter. Teammates Ray Nitschke, Max McGee, Boyd Dowler, Elijah Pitts, Jim Taylor, Jerry Kramer, and Carroll Dale also contributed to the Packers 35-10 win over Kansas City.
