These stamps were part of a booklet of five that was issued to celebrate the U.S. Lighthouse Service’s Bicentennial. The Lighthouse Service is still an important part of today’s modern Coast Guard, which also celebrated its bicentennial in 1990.
In the Gulf of Mexico, off the Florida Keys, the lighthouse at American Shoals is anchored to the sea floor and designed to withstand hurricane-force winds.
The oldest existing lighthouse in the Western Hemisphere is at Sandy Hook, New Jersey. It guards the entrance to the New York Harbor as it has since before the Revolutionary War.
