These stamps were part of a booklet of five that was issued to celebrate the U.S. Lighthouse Service’s Bicentennial. The Lighthouse Service is still an important part of today’s modern Coast Guard, which also celebrated its bicentennial in 1990.
The Admiralty Head lighthouse is located at the entrance to Puget Sound, off the Coast of Washington state. Built in 1887, it guided ships returning from Alaska to Seattle.
North Carolina’s Barrier Beaches is a dangerous section of water to navigate. Since 1871, the black and white striped Cape Hatteras lighthouse has lit the way for sailors. It is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States.
