In 1988, the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee was looking for a way to give stamp users an alternative to the usual U.S. flag and the unknown Americans pictured on postage. Their solution was a colorful new series of "mini-scapes." These bright, cheerful designs pictured generic landscapes and vignettes of familiar objects and scenes. The first stamp in this series, which pictured a red and yellow beach umbrella, was also the first postcard-rate stamp to be issued only in booklet form for use by vacationers.
