This block of four stamps was issued as a companion to the 1986 Arctic Explorers stamps. This block was issued one month prior to Admiral Richard Byrd's 100th birthday. The set also honors Nathaniel Palmer, Charles Wilkes and Lincoln Ellsworth.

Born in 1799 in Stonington, Connecticut, Palmer had a life-long love of the sea. As a child, he played in his fatherâs shipyard and began working on his first ship at just 14 years old.
