20th Anniversary Apollo 11 First Manned Lunar Landing

This stamp sheet from Palau commemorates the 20th anniversary of man’s first landing on the moon’s surface.

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong, followed by Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, became the first man to stand on the moon.  As Armstrong stepped out of the Apollo 11 lunar module, the Eagle, he spoke the famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Later, Armstrong commented to Aldrin, “It has a stark beauty all its own. It’s like much of the high desert in the United States. It’s different, but it’s pretty out here.”
