(US #2171) Father Flanagan, who founded “Boys Town,” which houses 450 boys and 20 girls and is a complete city with its own zip code, schools, churches and recreational facilities.
(US #2177) Buffalo Bill, who organized Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, complete with real cowboys, Indians, horses, and buffalo. Popular in the U.S. as well as Europe, his shows represented the Wild West as a place for glory and adventure.
(US #2181) Mary Cassatt, best known for her sensitive paintings of mothers and children. After attending Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts for four years, she studied painting in France, Italy, and Spain.
(US #2182 and #2197) Jack London, who wrote stories of his adventures as a miner in the Alaskan goldrush. He achieved instant success with his novel “Call of the Wild” and became the highest-paid, most-popular writer of his day.
(US #2183) Sitting Bull, rewarded the name “Sitting Bull” after showing great courage in a battle against the Crow Indians. His determination to defend Native American hunting grounds inspired the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapahoes to a victory over General Custer’s army in the battle of Little Bighorn.
