Why the stamp was issued:  To commemorate the 800th anniversary of the birth of Francis of Assisi.  There was some controversy around this stamp because it honored a religious figure.  The USPS intentionally left “saint” off the stamp and stated that it was a tribute to “his great humanitarian efforts” and that “his humanity has earned him reverence transcending all religious bounds.”  The stamp did receive widespread support from Congress and a petition in support of the stamp received more than 100,000 signatures.

About the stamp design:  National Geographic Society artist Ned Seidler designed this stamp based on several written descriptions of St. Francis.  The portrait depicts Francis with one hand raised before a group of five doves, representing his belief in a peaceful coexistence with nature.

First Day City:  The First Day ceremony for this stamp was held at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco, California.  San Francisco was named after St. Francis.

History the stamp represents:  Francis of Assisi renounced material goods and family ties and embraced a life of poverty. St. Francis is remembered for his love of nature and all creatures on Earth. He founded the Franciscan Order in 1209. The Order is still in existence today.
