# 1897-1904 - 1981-84 Transportation, set of 10
Engraved Transportation Stamps
A Collector Favorite
Begun in 1981, the Transportation Series is a favorite among collectors for its classically engraved designs and historic subject matter of traditional forms of transportation. You can get a mini-collection of Transportation stamps for an affordable price – you’ll save time and money over ordering the individual stamps.
This special set of 10 Transportation stamps includes stamps issued between 1981 and 1984 picturing the Omnibus, Locomotive, Handcar, Stagecoach, Motorcycle, Sleigh, Bicycle, Baby Buggy, Mail Wagon, and Hansom Cab.
The Transportation Series – A U.S. Postal First
The groundbreaking series marked the first time in US history, coil stamps featured their own unique designs rather than simply copying that of the current definitive stamps. Fifty more coil stamps would be issued over the course of the next 15 years, each picturing a different mode of transportation.
The various denominations provided face values to exactly match the rates for several categories of Third Class mail (bulk rate and quantity-discounted mail). As the rates changed, new stamps with new values were added. Never before had a stamp series included so many fractional cent values.
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing printed most of the stamps in the Transportation Series, although private contractors printed a few. All but a few of the later stamps were produced by engraved intaglio. Differences in precancels, tagging, paper and gum provide a large number of varieties.
By the time the last stamp was issued in 1995, the Transportation Series had become the largest US coil stamp series in history.
One aspect of the Transportation stamps that is particularly interesting is the use of tiny plate numbers at the bottom of some stamps. These Plate Number Coils (PNCs) were printed at intervals of 24, 48, or 52 stamps, varying by which press was used.
