Get "America the Beautiful" Flag Stamps on First Day Cover

The flag stamps of 1981 and 1982 pay tribute to Katharine Lee Bates' poem-turned song "America the Beautiful."  Each of the three stamps pictures a U.S. flag over an American scene with a corresponding line from the patriotic song.  These include "amber waves of grain," "sea to shining sea," and "purple mountain majesties."

Bates was inspired to write the poem during an 1893 trip to Colorado.  As Bates approached Colorado Springs, she was awestruck at how the Pikes Peak granite gave the mountains a purple hue.  As she stood on top of those “purple mountains” and looked down on the endless fields of grain, the poem came to mind. The ode to America’s natural beauty was praised by all who read it.

Each of the three stamps are tired to the cover with a first day of issue cancellation.  And the artwork cachet brings America's beautiful landscape to life.

A patriotic addition to your collection – order now.
