U.S. #1536 is titled “Mrs. John Douglas,” based on a painting by English artist Thomas Gainsborough. It’s part of the “Famous Works of Art” series, issued to mark the 100th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union. The eight stamps feature the theme of writing and reading letters. The design of each stamp was taken from paintings done by international artists.
