Issued in San Francisco, at the site of the first meeting of the United Nations, U.S. #1266 marked the 20th anniversary of the United Nations and the International Cooperation Year. The design is similar to the symbol of the International Cooperation Year, featuring shaking hands and the U.N. wreath.
The First United Nations Meeting in San Francisco
On April 25, 1945, delegates from 50 nations came to San Francisco for the United Nations Conference on International Organization. This first United Nations conference took place 12 days before Germany’s surrender and four months before Japan’s surrender.
The San Francisco conference was held to work out the details of a U.N. charter – the document that would define the organization’s form, powers, and goals. On June 26, 1945, the delegates from all 50 nations signed the charter. On October 24, 1945, the U.N. Charter was approved. That date is celebrated as United Nations Day all over the world.
