About the Dungeons & Dragons set: 10 Forever stamps issued for the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons. They picture 10 different designs showcasing characters, creatures, and encounters from Dungeons & Dragons. The selvage of the pane of 20 pictures a party of adventurers fighting a dragon, a gold 20-sided die (d20), and an example of a Dungeons & Dragons map.

History the stamp represents: The world of Dungeons & Dragons is full of unusual monsters. They range in temperament from docile to extremely deadly. Perhaps one of the most dangerous is the purple worm. It is a gargantuan monstrosity, meaning it belongs to the largest size class of Dungeons & Dragons monster.

Purple worms are 5 feet wide, 80 feet long, and weigh 40,000 pounds. They are deep purple and covered in tough natural armor. Their mouths are filled with many rows of teeth while their tails are equipped with a poisonous stinger. Purple worms are extremely fast and tough. While they are blind, they are also gifted with blindsight and tremorsense. These abilities allow them to perceive their surroundings and pinpoint vibrations without the use of their eyes. However, airborne creatures escape their notice.

Purple worms will eat just about anything. They can easily consume human- and horse-sized creatures in one bit as well as eat away at the rock and dirt in front of them while tunneling through the earth. Purple worms excrete any substances they cannot digest, often leaving behind precious metals, gemstones, and more. Some adventuring parties deliberately seek out purple worm tunnels to search for this valuable loot. However, it’s a risky venture. You never know when the purple worm might come back.
