About the Dungeons & Dragons set: 10 Forever stamps issued for the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons. They picture 10 different designs showcasing characters, creatures, and encounters from Dungeons & Dragons. The selvage of the pane of 20 pictures a party of adventurers fighting a dragon, a gold 20-sided die (d20), and an example of a Dungeons & Dragons map.

History the stamp represents: Drow (also known as dark elves) are a Dungeons & Dragons race known for having dark skin and white hair. They hail from the foreboding underground region known as the Underdark and often worship the demon spider goddess, Lolth. They are said to be “dark as faeries are bright,” weaker in hand-to-hand combat, but extremely strong magic users.

After originating as a type of monster to defeat, players can now choose to play a drow themselves. Playing as a drow means enjoying the benefits of superior darkvision and natural magical abilities. Plus, if your adventuring party somehow finds themselves traveling through the Underdark, having a drow onboard makes the journey a little less terrifying.

When drow were introduced to Dungeons & Dragons in 1977, they were portrayed as evil beings. However, that changed as time went on. In fact, one of the most famous drow of all time, Drizzt Do”Urden, rejected the evil nature of his civilization and became a hero of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. The character became so popular that he appeared in a number of fantasy novels, all of which made The New York Times Best Seller List. It’s proof that good and evil depends on the individual, it’s not inherent to an entire race or civilization.
