About the Dungeons & Dragons set: 10 Forever stamps issued for the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons. They picture 10 different designs showcasing characters, creatures, and encounters from Dungeons & Dragons. The selvage of the pane of 20 pictures a party of adventurers fighting a dragon, a gold 20-sided die (d20), and an example of a Dungeons & Dragons map.
History the stamp represents: Any Dungeons & Dragons monster classified as undead can make for an extra harrowing encounter for an adventuring party. Thankfully, many are run-of-the-mill skeletons, zombies, or other fairly weak monsters. However, there are some that require a lot more tactical skill to defeat. One example is the lich – a spellcaster who deliberately sought to defy death by magical means and became undead in the process.
The lich was one of the earliest monsters introduced to Dungeons & Dragons. It is created in a dark ritual involving the drinking of a deadly potion called the Elixir of Defilation. It also requires the would-be-lich to carry out an act of pure evil. When successful, the individual dies after the ritual but rises as a lich several days later. Unlike other undead creatures, a lich keeps its memories and abilities it had while alive, making it an even more formidable foe.
One of the most infamous liches in Dungeons & Dragons was Acererak. He was described in the Tomb of Horrors (1978) adventure as “a human magic-user/cleric of surpassing evil.” Acererak proved to be such a popular enemy with players that he appeared in several more adventures in the following decades. It’s a testament to the idea that great villains sometimes become more famous than great heroes.
