About the Dungeons & Dragons set: 10 Forever stamps issued for the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons. They picture 10 different designs showcasing characters, creatures, and encounters from Dungeons & Dragons. The selvage of the pane of 20 pictures a party of adventurers fighting a dragon, a gold 20-sided die (d20), and an example of a Dungeons & Dragons map.

History the stamp represents: One of the most famous evil creatures in the Dungeons & Dragons universe is the five-headed dragon, Tiamat. She is said to rule “the first plane of the Nine Hells where she spawns all of evil dragonkind.” She is considered both a queen and a goddess and has been part of the Dungeons & Dragons game since 1975.

As a mother of all chromatic (evil) dragons, Tiamat’s five heads represent the five customary colors these dragons appear in: black, blue, green, red, and white. Each head has the powers associated with that type of dragon. If five heads weren’t powerful enough, Tiamat also has a long tail ending in a poison stinger. She is greedy, vain, and arrogant, with a lifelong goal of spreading evil and creating as many chromatic dragons as possible to aid her.

Tiamat is the mortal enemy of her brother Bahamut, the father and king of metallic (good) dragons. Interestingly, their creator, the god Io, originally intended the two to be mates, but their personalities clashed immediately. When Tiamat murdered their older sibling, Vorel, Io banished her.

David M. Ewalt of Forbes, called “Tiamat “the most fearsome dragon in D&D’s history.” Lucily, most adventuring parties are unlikely to encounter her… as long as they stay out of the Nine Hells, that is!
