About the Dungeons & Dragons set: 10 Forever stamps issued for the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons. They picture 10 different designs showcasing characters, creatures, and encounters from Dungeons & Dragons. The selvage of the pane of 20 pictures a party of adventurers fighting a dragon, a gold 20-sided die (d20), and an example of a Dungeons & Dragons map.

History the stamp represents: In Dungeons & Dragons, adventurers must take extreme care when dealing with dragons. Their size and power aside, it makes a big difference whether the dragon is metallic or chromatic. Chromatic dragons are evil, so prepare to fight, run, or die. Metallic dragons are good, so the likelihood of emerging from an encounter unscathed is much higher.

Metallic dragons are ruled over by their king, Bahamut. They are righteous and unselfish, although can still be aggressive if threatened. Metallic dragons may be gold, silver, bronze, copper, brass, mercury, iron, steel, or the extremely rare platinum. Their breath weapons vary by metal, but include fire, ice, lightning, acid, sleeping gas, or poison. Each type of metal also has a different climate it generally prefers to live in. For example, bronze dragons enjoy coastal regions while brass dragons prefer the scorching heat of desert areas. Some, particularly steel dragons, prefer the company of humanoids over other dragons. They may choose to spend their time in humanoid form and live in cities rather than an isolated lair like some of their kin.

As far as alignment goes, metallic dragons range from chaotic or lawful good to neutral. This has led some to help parties of adventurers on their quests. However, care should always be taken to show them proper respect… they are still dragons, after all.
