About the Winter Woodland Animals set: A set of four stamp designs picturing a deer, rabbit, owl, and fox, in the snowy habitats they call home during the winter. The stamps were issued to celebrate the natural beauty of winter and all picture illustrations by Katie Kirk.
History the stamp represents: Deer are one of the most adaptable species in the world. They can be found in a wide range of habitats from frozen tundra to tropical rainforest. The largest populations are found in the Canadian Rockies and Columbia Mountains, but they are widespread across the rest of the continent, too.
North America is home to six deer species: white-tailed, mule, and brocket deer, plus caribou, elk, and moose. These deer are able to survive in a variety of climates thanks to several physical and behavioral adaptations. For example, they grow thick coats in the winter to keep warm and then shed those coats to stay cool in the summer. Deer are also very athletic animals, excelling at jumping and swimming. This allows them to escape predators and access food and other resources that might otherwise be difficult to reach. In the winter, deer supplement their regular diet of twigs, stems, and grasses with higher calorie foods like nuts, fruits, and mushrooms. Their sharp hooves allow them to dig under the snow to reach food when necessary.
Like any animal, harsh winters with especially cold temperatures or deep snow can spell trouble for deer. Thankfully, they are usually able to adapt to the conditions and make it through to spring.
